Matt Hawkins, CEO of Cudos, calls his project the “Airbnb of computing”

Many people turn to pawnbrokers during hard circumstances and surrender their valued items in return for cash. H&T, the largest network of pawnbrokers in the UK, announced a 43% increase in earnings last week and expects to add additional locations soon.

But cutting-edge technology may provide cash-strapped Britons an option to giving a shopkeeper their laptop, iPad, or PlayStation. One tech company’s creator is willing to pay you to keep them at home.

Cudos CEO Matt Hawkins refers to his initiative as the “Airbnb of computers.” Cudos pays to borrow their members’ extra computer processing when they’re not using it, same to how homeowners with extra room may rent it out using an app. The company makes use of blockchain technology to create a widespread network of processing power powered by people’s home gadgets and make the network available to cloud computing companies looking for more capacity.

That offer is highly alluring because of the acute chip shortages and the industry’s rising operational costs.

“People desire to save money in today’s times. It will benefit everyone if we can make use of the available computing capability.

Some people may be concerned about letting a stranger onto their computer, but Hawkins dismisses any worries. He said that it operates in a secure setting with no access to other components of the system. Everyone is aware of Dropbox, but nobody is concerned that Dropbox will take all of your stuff.

Many folks were ready to join up and make the commitment. It recently collaborated with African telecoms operator Tingo, giving it access to up to 20 million additional customers — and their computers — and paid out over £30 million to individuals who joined the program last year.

Hawkins has appointed two former PlayStation executives to the board of Cudos and has big development aspirations. He believes it will just take a short while for his technology to become standard.
